Each month the Cherry Hill Trail Crew hosts trail maintenance sessions throughout the township's 10 trail systems for groups such as the Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, church groups, corporate programs or other civic organzations wishing to contribute the preservation of Cherry Hill's open space and recreational trails.

There's more to building a trail than moving rocks and dirt. Trails are part of larger systems that are the result of careful and diligent planning and collaboration, with consideration for preservation of our open spaces. These trail systems must serve the needs of multiple user groups and take environmental and geographical factors into account.

The Cherry Hill Trail Crew uses established trail building and maintenance techniques developed and used by the US Department of Agriculture - Division of Forestry and the International Mountain Bike Association that strive to meet three goals when designing and building trails: 1) limit environmental impacts; 2) keep maintenance requirements to a minimum; and 3) avoid user conflicts.

While land managers and other administrators are ultimately responsible for land planning processes, committed trail users and community groups, like the Cherry Hill Trail Crew, have important roles to play as well. Planning, after all, is ultimately about the big picture, and that picture includes not only the forest and the trees, but also the entire trails community.
